The Sacred Rose
A Two-Hour Online Gathering
Roses carry deep mysteries — woven through every spiritual tradition on earth.
Artists, poets, and musicians across centuries have sung of the rose's beauty and grace. Its timeless fragrance coupled with the blood-drawing thorn that symbolise the ecstasy and the pain, the beauty and the sacrifice of life.
Across all traditions, a few themes emerge as one: the rose as a symbol of divine love, the soul's unfolding.
The Rose Across the Traditions
Christianity — The Virgin Mary & Christ
The rose is intimately linked to the Virgin Mary, often called the "Mystical Rose." White roses represent her purity; red roses symbolize Christ's passion and the blood shed at the crucifixion. The word rosary itself derives from the Latin rosarium — "rose garden" — and praying it is seen as offering a spiritual bouquet to Mary.
Islam & Sufism — The Prophet Muhammad & Divine Love
It is believed that roses sprouted from the earth where droplets of the Prophet Muhammad's sweat touched the ground. In the mystical Sufi tradition, the rose represents the heart and divine love — its thorns the trials of the spiritual path, its unfolding petals the soul's journey toward closeness with God. The Persian poet Rumi used the rose as one of his most beloved images for this reason.
Hinduism — Lakshmi & the Divine Feminine
In Hinduism, the goddess Lakshmi was believed to have been created from rose petals. The rose is associated with her and symbolizes purity, love, and spiritual awakening — woven into religious ceremony and ritual as an offering of devotion.
Ancient Egypt — Isis, Hathor & Rebirth
"Every sweet-scented rose tells from its heart the secrets of heaven and earth."
— Rumi
